Week 10 – Assignment

Your Assessment:

End-To-End Assessment: Supporting The Student Education Journey

Word Count: 1,500 words

The Main Goal

Explain what collective bargaining is, how it works (or doesn’t work) in your own job, and how new Government plans and EU laws are going to change the future of work in Ireland.

Suggested structure:

Section 1: The Basics (What is it?)

  • Define Collective Bargaining: Explain that it is when workers join together (usually in a union) to negotiate pay and conditions instead of talking to the boss one-on-one.

  • The Irish Way: Mention “Volunteerism.” This is the traditional Irish system where the Government stays out of it and hopes employers and unions play fair together.

Section 2: Your Workplace (How does it look to you?)

  • Current Situation: Describe your job. Do you have a union? Do you have negotiated pay scales?

  • The Impact: If you have bargaining, how does it help? If you don’t have it, what problems does that cause (e.g., lower pay, no say in changes)?

Section 3: The Future (What is changing?)

You need to talk about:

  • The EU Goal: The EU wants 80% of workers to be covered by collective agreements. Ireland is currently far below this.

  • The National Action Plan (2026-2030): Mention that the Irish Government now has a specific plan.

Checklist for Success

  • Did I define Collective Bargaining?

  • Did I describe my own workplace/sector?

  • Did I mention the EU Directive and the 80% target?

  • Is it roughly 1,500 words?

Your answer should include reference to the course materials and may also reflect on your own experience.
All such material should be correctly cited and referenced, and you must include a bibliography at the end of your work regardless of the format you submit your assignment
• The bibliography is not included in the word count.
• Take care that the work you present is your own, bearing in mind NCI/SIPTU’s College plagiarism policy.

YOU will receive:
•Written feedback telling you what was well done, and what was less well done.
•Advice on presentation and referencing
•Hints about how to apply what you have learned in following modules.
